ACROSS používáme zejména při pohybu po povrchu z jedné strany na druhou. Předložku často překládáme jako přes nebo napříč:

OVER používáme především při pohybu nad něčím. Předložku často překládáme jako přes nebo nad:

We flew over the Atlantic.
 Letěli jsme přes Atlantik.

 Ptáci krouží nad polem.

THROUGH používáme zejména při pohybu skrz něco. Předložku překládáme obvykle jako přes; skrz nebo slovíčkem v sedmém pádu (tunelem, oknem, mlhou...):

The water flows through the ceiling.
 Voda teče skrz strop.
Don't go through the tunnel.
 Nejezdi tunelem (= skrz tunel).
