Porovnejte spojky IF a IN CASE:

Vezmeme si slunečník, pokud bude svítit sluníčko.

IF = pokud/jestli
IN CASE = pro případ

IF používáme v kondicionálech:

If it rains, I'll get wet because I don't have an umbrella.	Jestli bude pršet, zmoknu, protože nemám deštník.
If you approach the horse from behind, he'll kick you.	Pokud se ke koni blížíš zezadu, kopne tě.

IN CASE používáme v situaci, která možná nastane, a proto se na ni připravujeme:

Do you have an umbrella in case it rains?	Máš deštník pro případ, že by pršelo?
Don't approach the horse from behind in case he kicks.	Nepřibližuj se ke koni zezadu pro případ, že by kopal.

Do you have a map in case we get lost?

Pro případ, že se něco stane:

Do you have it because we might get lost?

Máš mapu pro případ, že se ztratíme?

Pokud:

JUST IN CASE můžeme použít i samostatně:

Vezmi si deštník. Jen pro jistotu.

Neříkáme: In case.

Po IN CASE a po IF nepoužíváme obvykle WILL:

Po IN CASE OF (v případě) používáme podstatné jméno:

In case of rain you'll get wet.	V případě deště zmokneš.
In case of fire, use this fire extinguisher.	V případě požáru použijte tento hasicí přístroj.

IN CASE OF... se často významově podobá větě s IF:

In case of rain you'll get wet.	If it rains you'll get wet.
