BE ABLE TO (= doslova BÝT SCHOPNÝ) má podobný význam jako modální slovesa CAN a COULD, a proto je někdy nahrazuje.

I am able to relax all day. = Celý den můžu relaxovat.

I am able to relax.
I can relax.
Celý den můžu relaxovat.
I am able to relax all day.

Pokud mluvíme o schopnosti v přítomném čase, lze použít jak CAN, tak i BE ABLE TO:

I can play.
 Můžu hrát.
I'm able to play.

Simon is able to travel anywhere. = Simon může cestovat kamkoliv.

He is able to travel.
He can travel.
Simon může cestovat kamkoliv.
Simon is able to travel anywhere.

They are able to find it on the map. = Můžou to najít na mapě.

They are able to find it.
They can find it.
Můžou to najít na mapě.
They are able to find it on the map.

Pokud mluvíme o nějaké obecné schopnosti v minulém čase, lze použít jak COULD, tak i BE ABLE TO:

I could play.
 Mohl jsem hrát.
I was able to play.

When I was younger, I was able to surf well. = Když jsem byl mladší, uměl jsem dobře surfovat.

I was able to surf.
I could surf.
Když jsem byl mladší, uměl jsem dobře surfovat.
When I was younger, I was able to surf well.

You were never able to eat the whole pizza. = Nikdy jsi nemohla sníst celou pizzu.

You could never...

BE ABLE TO bývá obvykle formálnější než CAN/COULD, často jsou ale zaměnitelné:

Mohu vám pomoci.
I am able to help you.
Můžu ti pomoct.
I can help you.
Uměla francouzsky.
She was able to speak French.
Uměla francouzsky.
She could speak French.

The Wi-Fi is working, so I can send the email. = Wifi funguje, takže můžu poslat ten e-mail.

Hovorovější:
I can send it.
Formálnější:
I am able to send it.
Wifi funguje, takže můžu poslat ten e-mail.
The Wi-Fi is working, so I can send the email.

Někdy nelze použít modální slovesa CAN/COULD, ale pouze jejich opis BE ABLE TO:

We will be able to buy a house soon. = Brzy si budeme moci koupit dům.

We will be able to buy it.
We will can...

Lisa has been able to use the computer since she was two. = Lisa umí používat počítač od svých dvou let.

Všimněte si, že ABLE TO zůstává stejné, mění se pouze sloveso BE:

He isn't able to quit smoking.
 Nemůže přestat kouřit.
Tina wasn't able to sleep yesterday.
 Tina včera nemohla spát.
Are you able to book a table?
 Můžete si rezervovat stůl?
Have you been able to meet them?
 Mohli jste se s nimi setkat?

Amanda was able to speak fluent English. = Amanda uměla mluvit plynně anglicky.

BE ABLE TO někdy překládáme jako – být schopný; zvládnout nebo dokázat:

I am able to finish it in time.
 Jsem schopen to dokončit včas.
We were able to visit many places.
 Zvládli jsme navštívit hodně míst.
They were able to fix it.
 Dokázali to spravit.

We were able to buy everything we needed. = Zvládli jsme koupit vše, co jsme potřebovali.
